Man Gets Five-Year Term in Dog Mauling Trial

August 30, 1985

CONROE, Texas (AP) _ A man has been sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of reckless injury to a child in the fatal mauling of his girlfriend’s 4-year-old son by a pit bull terrier.

James Bryant Traxler, 30, who later married the child’s mother, was convicted Thursday. He was ordered by District Judge Ernest Coker Sr. to serve the sentence concurrently with a 10-year prison term he’s serving on drug- related charges.

The boy, James Miller, was killed Feb. 23, 1984. Defense attorney Roy Rowland said the dog, later ordered killed, was sick that day but Assistant District Attorney Peter Speers said Traxler ″knew what kind of dog he had.″

The boy’s mother, Jeri Miller Traxler, also is charged with reckless injury to a child and is expected to stand trial Sept. 16.
