123 Anti-Nuclear Protesters Arrested at Nevada Test Site
MERCURY, Nev. (AP) _ One hundred twenty-three anti-nuclear demonstrators were arrested for trespassing Saturday after they walked onto the Nevada Test Site as part of an Easter weekend protest.
The protesters were cited and released, said Derek Scammell, spokesman for the U.S. Department of Energy.
They were among approximately 1,000 people who set up a campground next to the test site 65 miles north of Las Vegas.
″We have one here every year at Easter, it’s an annual ritual,″ Scammell said.
Underground nuclear weapons tests are conducted at the 1,350-square mile facility.
