Two Killed in Underworld Execution

January 24, 1988

REGGIO DI CALABRIA, Italy (AP) _ Gunmen riding a motorcycle killed two people and wounded a third Sunday in what police called an underworld execution.

Giuseppe Morabito, 46; Carmelo Nobile, 28; and Valentino Carini, 55, were shot at about noon as they were standing in front of a bar in this Calabrian city, police said.

The two assassins sped off on the motorcycle.

Nobile was pronounced dead at the scene, while Morabito died later at a hospital. Carini was hospitalized in guarded condition.

Police said the shootings were apparently part of a power struggle between rival clans of the ’Ndrangheta, Calabria’s version of the Sicilian Mafia, for control of railroad and highway construction work contracts.

Sunday’s attack brought to nine the number of slayings blamed on the ’Ndrangheta this year in Calabria, which forms the toe of the Italian boot.

Six have died in this city alone.
