Marlins Put Preston Wilson on DL

July 3, 2001

MIAMI (AP) _ The Florida Marlins placed center fielder Preston Wilson on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ligament in his left thumb.

To fill the roster spot, the Marlins are expected to buy the contract of outfielder Ryan Thompson from Triple-A Calgary on Tuesday.

Wilson injured his thumb diving for a ball hit by Pat Burrell in the Marlins’ 8-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

Wilson has a .268 average with nine home runs and 40 RBIs. He batted .118 in June with one home run and nine RBIs, and was moved from the cleanup spot to sixth in the lineup.

Thompson, who played for the New York Yankees last season, is batting .313 in 76 games with Calgary. He has 19 homers, 26 doubles and 68 RBIs.
