Joan Phyllis (Crossley) Ballenger, 81, left this earth on Jan. 25, 2019, following a short illness. Her family was by her side at the time of her passing, in Corona, Calif.
She was born Dec. 9, 1937, in Kankakee, the daughter of Mary Francis and Norris Crossley. Joan attended high school in Kankakee before marrying Tommy Ballenger in the late 1950s. Joan had four children, and her passion for people led to her work in health care at both the Manteno State Hospital and the Kankakee State Hospital.
In the early 1980s, she relocated to Sacramento, Calif., with her daughter, Lola, and worked as a nursing assistant, where she proved to be as good a friend as a caregiver to many of her patients. She enjoyed spending her free time with family, playing Bingo and chasing the big win on lottery scratchers. After retirement, she moved to be with her son, Keith, and family, who reside in Corona, Calif.
She leaves to cherish her memory, one son, Keith (Clarice) Crossley, of Corona; one daughter, Tina Vieira, of Sacramento; one sister, Mary Johnson, of Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Curtis (Penny) Crossley, of Kankakee; 15 grandchildren (who affectionately called her “Grandma JoJo”), Tyjuan, Kiauna, Athena, Heather, Stephanie, Aaron Jr. “AJ,” Antwon, Aramis, Arianna, Lekai, Darryl “Wayne” Jr., Shenise, Dontae, Demille and Fleetalyn; 25 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Mary Francis and Norris Crossley; two daughters, Lola Williams and Sheri Townsend; and one brother, Norris “Zeke” Crossley Jr.
