Troy Balderson and Danny O’Connor running neck and neck in 12th Congressional District race

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Republican Troy Balderson and Democrat Danny O’Connor are running neck and neck in the 12th Congressional District special election.

As more votes have been counted, O’Connor’s early lead steadily narrowed. With about 91 percent of the precincts reporting, O’Connor was hanging onto a lead of only about 200 votes, according to the Ohio Secretary of State.

O’Connor was leading in Franklin County, and Balderson was ahead in the more Republican counties of Delaware, Licking, Marion, Morrow, Muskingum and Richland.

The reliably Republican district, which a Democrat has represented only once since 1940, is more competitive than usual. The seat opened up with the resignation earlier this year of GOP Rep. Pat Tiberi.

The district runs from Mansfield down to north Columbus and east to Zanesville and covers some of the most Republican areas of the entire state.

The winner will serve the remainder of the year and will have to seek re-election in November to a full, two-year term.
