ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) _ Third-seeded Jim Courier of the United States beat Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 today in the first round of the Australian Hardcourt championship.
``It’s a tough draw to play a qualifier like Hlasek,″ Courier said. ``It was a tough match for me because he had three matches under his belt to get used to the balls and the conditions.″
Hlasek was forced to play the qualifying tournament because his agent failed to send in an entry form.
In other first-round matches, Hendrik Dreekmann of Germany upset second-seeded Wayne Ferreira of South Africa 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, fourth-seeded Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands beat Fabrice Santoro of France 6-3, 6-3, and sixth-seeded Jason Stoltenberg of Australia beat Nicklas Kulti of Sweden 7-5, 6-3.
