State board adopts guidelines on forced school mergers

October 4, 2018

BETHEL, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont Board of Education has adopted a set of guidelines to help make decisions about forced school mergers.

The board held an all-day meeting in Bethel Tuesday to discuss how to recommend mergers for school districts that weren’t able to put together a voluntary merger plan under Act 46. Vermont Public Radio reports Board Chair Krista Huling said at the top of the meeting Tuesday that the school district consolidation law did not specify how to do so, hence the purpose of the meeting.

The board says it will consider local town votes as well as weighing geography for potential school district mergers.

The state board has more discussions planned in working toward a final merger plan due Nov. 30.
