Mother convicted of child’s injuries

November 17, 2018

A Fort Wayne woman will be sentenced next month for injuries to her 3-month-old son, who police believe was shaken.

Morgan J. Braun, 22, was found guilty by a jury Thursday of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, a felony, in connection with an incident that occurred Dec. 29, 2016. The boy’s father, Eugene Estrada Jr., was sentenced in July to 14 years in prison for the same incident.

Braun’s sentencing is set for Dec. 14.

When the couple took their son to the hospital on Dec. 31, 2016, Estrada reportedly told medical personnel that he and the boy had fallen in the shower two days prior. According to court documents, an emergency room doctor determined the baby was in critical condition because of a brain bleed.

During an investigation, an ophthalmologist found hemorrhages behind both eyes, indicating the child had been shaken. The combination of injuries, the ophthalmologist said, could only be caused by the violent, repeated shaking of an infant.
