PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ Here's how it went for Garth Brooks on Monday at spring training for the San Diego Padres:

COUNTRY CAMPER: Brooks took part in hitting and fielding drills in preparation for the Padres first intrasquad scrimmage Tuesday. Brooks, battling tendinitis in his right (throwing) shoulder, will be restricted to a designated hitter.

HIGH NOTE: Brooks hit one home run during batting practice for the third consecutive day. Brooks was one of only three players on the Padres spring training roster who didn't have his picture taken for photo day.

ON THE RECORD: ``You can go through all the fundamentals you want, take all the batting practice, but once you cross that line, that's when he's going to find out that the game can go pretty fast at times. That pitcher's throwing pretty hard out there, mixing up pitches, and you don't know what's coming next.'' _ Padres manager Bruce Bochy.
