DeGrom leads Mets at plate and mound in win
NEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom hit a tiebreaking single and again shut down the Marlins with seven impressive innings, and David Wright doubled twice and drove in two runs as the New York Mets completed a three-game sweep of Miami with a 9-1 victory Sunday.
Wright, Curtis Granderson and Juan Lagares each had RBI doubles, and Chris Young added a sacrifice fly for New York in its eighth win on a 10-game homestand heading into the All-Star break.
New York jumped over the Marlins, losers of four straight, and into third place in the National League East.
Washington’s Jayson Werth homered and drove in four runs, and Tanner Roark pitched seven strong innings to lead the Nationals over the Philadelphia Phillies 10-3.
Ryan Zimmerman also went deep and had two RBIs, Ian Desmond knocked in two runs, and Anthony Rendon had three hits and an RBI for Washington, which won the last two games of the series and stayed tied with the Atlanta Braves atop the NL East entering the All-Star break.
Atlanta beat the Chicago Cubs 10-7 after Chris Johnson had three hits, including his third homer in two days.
At Houston, Clay Buchholz allowed three hits and struck out a career-high 12 batters in his fifth career shutout as the Boston Red Sox trounced the Houston Astros 11-0.
Brock Holt had a career-best five hits, including a leadoff homer, to help the Red Sox to their fourth victory in five games.
Cleveland slugger Yan Gomes’ two-run homer in the eighth inning gave the Indians a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox, while All-Star David Price allowed just five hits in eight-plus innings as the Tampa Bay Rays shut out the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0.
At Kansas City, Missouri, Eric Hosmer’s RBI double capped a five-run seventh inning as the Royals avoided a four-game sweep with a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
In other games, Mike Trout doubled twice and drove in four runs as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Texas Rangers 10-7, the Cincinnati Reds downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2, the Milwaukee Brewers thrashed the St. Louis Cardinals 11-2 and the San Francisco Giants defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-4.
Minnesota’s Brian Dozier slammed two home runs in the Twins’ 13-5 win over the Colorado Rockies, the Oakland Athletics beat the Seattle Mariners 4-1, the Los Angeles Dodgers blanked the San Diego Padres 1-0 and the Baltimore Orioles were 3-1 winners over the New York Yankees in a rain-shortened game.
