BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) _ Top-seeded Francisco Clavet saved five set points in the first-set tiebreak before advancing Friday into the semifinals of the Cerveza Club Colombia Open.

Clavet got a 7-6 (14-12), 2-3 victory when fellow Spaniard Emilio Alvarez, suffering from flu-like symptoms, became disoriented after the fifth game of the second set and was forced to retire.

Also reaching the semifinals in the clay court tournament were Italy’s Davide Sanguinetti, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Jordi Burillo, and Vincent Spadea of Boca Raton, Fla., who edged eighth-seeded Fernandeo Meligeni of Brazil 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

Sanguinetti, an NCAA semifinalist for UCLA in 1993, is appearing in his first ATP Tour semifinal.

Spadea is the lone American in the 32-player singles draw.
