BYFIELD, Mass. (AP) _ Dan Gadzuric, one of the nation’s most highly recruited prep centers who had been considering applying for the NBA draft, announced Monday that he will attend UCLA.
``It was a very hard decision,″ Gadzuric said during a news conference at Governor Dummer Academy. ``I had to decide which is best. UCLA reminded me of home. I met the players there and they were very kind. They have a young coaching staff and they were all very kind to me.″
Gadzuric, a 6-foot, 11-inch McDonald’s and Parade All-America whose parents live in the Netherlands, averaged 21 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocked shots last season. He led Governor Dummer to the state Class C championship.
Considered the best basketball prospect from Massachusetts since Patrick Ewing came out of Cambridge in 1981, Gadzuric expects to play right away for the Bruins, who desperately need a center since Jelani McCoy left the team in February.
Before choosing college over the NBA, Gadzuric said he figured he would be selected ``somewhere between 10 and 15″ in the first round.
``I think Dan is being a little modest,″ said his coach, Steve Metz. ``He could probably be a lottery pick.″
Gadzuric had narrowed his college choices to George Washington, Kansas, Kentucky, California and Connecticut before choosing the Bruins.
