Pakistani prisoner found dead in Indian jail

February 22, 2014

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — A Pakistani prisoner has committed suicide at a jail in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir, prison officials said Saturday.

Showkat Ali used a scarf to hang himself from the iron bars of a toilet window at the prison in Jammu city, jail superintendent Harish Kotwal said. His body was found early Saturday.

An investigation has been ordered into his death, prison official K. Rajendra said.

Ali was arrested in 2008 after he was caught without proper papers in India and was sent back to Pakistan in 2010, police said. He re-entered Indian Kashmir in 2011 and was arrested soon after.

The Himalayan region of Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, with both countries claiming it in its entirety. The two countries share a porous border, and hundreds of Indian and Pakistani prisoners are languishing in each other’s jails awaiting repatriation after being caught without the proper papers.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said in 2013 that there were 535 Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails and 272 Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails.
