Six Killed After Car Falls in Lake

April 9, 2001

LEWISVILLE, Texas (AP) _ A car rolled through a barricade into a lake, killing six of the seven people inside. One witness said the distraught survivor was trying to teach his son to drive.

The father had to be restrained from diving back into the water for his children after Sunday night’s accident at Lewisville Lake, the witness said. He was briefly held for questioning and released.

``We wanted to sort out the facts of who was in the car with him and what they were doing,″ said police spokesman Richard Douglass. ``He had gone in the water along with the son, then escaped and was quite upset.″

The vehicle had broken through timber barricades at the road’s end and went into the lake in Lake Lewisville Park, Douglass said.

Police refused to provide details on the victims’ ages and on how many of the car’s occupants were related.

A witness, Daniel DeLuna, told Fort Worth station KTVT that the man ``told me his son wanted to know how to drive. So he let his son behind the wheel, and when he accelerated, he put it in drive instead of reverse. That’s when it went into the water.″

``He was just telling me his kids were in there, his wife and a few other people,″ DeLuna said. ``He wanted me to jump in, and he wanted somebody else to jump in, and we were all holding him back because he was wanting to jump in himself.″

Lewisville is about 20 miles north of Dallas.
