First Command Joins Hiring 100,000 Military Spouses Campaign

November 27, 2018

FORT WORTH, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 27, 2018--First Command Financial Services, Inc., today announced it has joined the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes Hiring 100,000 Military Spouses campaign. The three-year campaign will raise awareness of military spouse unemployment and encourage employers to make military spouse hiring commitments, ultimately resulting in a combined 100,000 military spouses hired by the end of 2021.

“This campaign is a call to action for American businesses to make military spouse employment a top priority, and by joining the Hiring 100,000 Military Spouses campaign, First Command is doing just that,” said Eric Eversole, president of Hiring Our Heroes and vice president at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Even as the job market grows, military spouses continue to face unemployment rates four times the national average, according to Hiring Our Heroes. As a result, many military families find themselves facing the tough decision to either forego two incomes or leave military service – a choice that ultimately hurts the military’s ability to retain service members with families.

First Command’s commitment to hiring military spouses is underscored by the recognition that these women and men are the key financial decision makers for their families and face unique challenges in their pursuit of meaningful careers.

“Military spouses are ideally suited to careers in financial coaching due to their personal experiences with the financial challenges facing service member families,” said Scott Spiker, chairman/CEO of First Command. “They often shoulder the primary responsibility for household budgeting and savings. They must manage family finances during those times when the active-duty spouse is deployed for extended periods. They carry the burden of knowing that they will face these responsibilities alone in the event of a combat death. At the end of active-duty service, they play a critical role in navigating the financial complexities of the family’s transition to civilian life. And due to frequent moves, they face unique challenges in finding and maintaining meaningful employment. The Hiring 100,000 Military Spouses campaign is an important opportunity for us to support the military spouses who support our Nation’s military families.”
