Overnight fire in Waupun displaces three

April 9, 2019

WAUPUN – Fire and smoke filled a Waupun house late Monday night, causing significant damage.

Crews responded to 36 W. Franklin St. shortly after 11 p.m. to find flames coming from the front of the house and in the living room area.

The two-story, two-unit apartment is owned by Douglas and Betty Woxland. Tenants in both apartment units were able to escape without injury and no firefighters were hurt during operations.

Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa said the fire was knocked down within 20 minutes and crews remained on the scene for approximately three hours overhauling the building and checking a neighboring unit that sustained smoke damage.

Agencies assisting at the scene included fire departments from Alto and Brandon/Fairwater, Fond du Lac County RIT Team 5, the Waupun Police Department, Lifestar Ambulance, Waupun Utilities and Alliant Energy.

Three people were displaced by the fire. The cause remains under investigation and damage estimates are not yet determined.
