WASHINGTON (AP) _ Juwan Howard scored 13 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter and had 10 rebounds as the Washington Wizards defeated the Phoenix Suns 109-99 Sunday.

Washington scored the first 12 points of the game and never trailed. Phoenix, behind Rex Chapman's season-high 33 points, tied the game in the fourth quarter before Washington pulled away.

The Suns, already playing without Danny Manning (abdominal strain) and Kevin Johnson (knee surgery), lost point guard Jason Kidd to a twisted right ankle with 7:17 left in the second quarter and didn't return.

Washington point guard Rod Strickland, taking advantage of Kidd's abensce, just missed a triple-double _ scoring 26 points with 11 assists and nine rebounds.

Chris Webber, who keyed the 12-0 game-opening run, finished with 22 points for the Wizards.

The Suns erased a 13-point first-half deficit to tie the game at 85 with nine minutes to play in the fourth quarter. But Phoenix's attempt to take its first lead of the game failed when Cedric Ceballos shot an air ball.

Webber hit a 3-pointer on the other end to put the Wizards ahead for good. Howard followed with a basket in the paint, several free throws and then a hook.

The Wizards outsocred the Suns 29-21 in the final quarter.

Washington outrebounded Washington 44-36.
