WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) _ Race driver Mike DeSantis died Saturday after crashing at Wall Township Speedway.

DeSantis, 53, of South River, crashed his mini stock car into a wall on the eighth lap of the Legends feature race, said Charlie Roberts, a spokesman for the speedway.

A nursing supervisor at Jersey Shore Medical Center, who refused to identify herself, said DeSantis was pronounced dead at the hospital. No further information was released at the request of the family.

Roberts did not know whether DeSantis was wearing head and neck restraints at the time of the crash.

Calls by The Associated Press to the New Jersey State Police were not immediately returned Sunday.
