MEC taking applications for annual D.C. youth tour
BULLHEAD CITY — Six eligible high school juniors have an opportunity to win a free trip to Washington D.C. — home of the nation’s political system and some of the finest museums and memorials in the world.
“This is a chance for six youths to win a trip of a lifetime,” said Zen Mocarski, public affairs specialist for Mohave Electric Cooperative.
MEC is accepting applications for the contest, which includes submission of a 300-500-word essay based on one of these topics:
What is the biggest energy challenges your generation will face and how can you and your electric cooperative help meet those challenges?Washington Youth Tour students have an opportunity to visit with their congressman or woman. Write an essay about the concerns and questions you would discuss with your representative. Explain why these are important issues to you.The Bill of Rights establishes the founding freedoms and principles of the United States. Write an essay on which Amendment is most important to you and why.
The application deadline is Oct. 5.
The supervised trip is June 13-20, 2019.
Those selected to advance to the semi-finals will be required to deliver an oral presentation on Oct. 25 on an assigned energy- or cooperative-related question.
Entry rules and potential essay topics are included in the application form.
Eligible juniors are those with a parent or legal guardian who is a member of MEC.
“A parent or legal guardian who pays an MEC bill is a member,” Mocarski said.
Applications are at high school offices in Kingman, Bullhead City and Mohave Valley. It also can be obtained online at www.mohaveelectric.com by selecting the Washington Youth Tour link.
Prior to 2018, only two students were selected for the trip. In 2017, a decision was made to increase that number to six.
“This is an opportunity for a hands-on learning experience,” Mocarski said. “Seeing pictures in a book or watching a show on television can’t always provide the perspective that can be obtained from visiting places in person.”
Semi-finalists each receive $25 gift cards. One will be designated as an alternate to take the place of one of the winners if they end up not being able to make the June 2019 trip.
