Badger South girls tennis: Watertown nets 5-2 win at Oregon
OREGON — Watertown’s girls tennis team improved to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the Badger South with a 5-2 win over Oregon on Friday.
“I’m happy to come away with a 5-2 win,” Watertown girls tennis coach Andy Dobbins said. “We really had to dig deep in a few matches and rely on smart play and toughness. Oregon has talented players throughout their lineup and they pushed us in almost every match. This point of the season can be a grind, and the girls are doing a good job of staying positive and focusing on our goals.”
Aubrey Schmutzler rallied from a set down for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Isabelle Krier at No. 1 singles.
“I’m incredibly proud of Aubrey and the way she came back in that match. She did not play a great first set and wasn’t feeling the best. But she fought though it and showed some incredible toughness against a solid player. That was a big moment for her, to fight through adversity and come out on top.”
Taylor Adams lost in three sets at No. 2 singles. Alayna Clark won in straight sets at No. 3 singles.
“Taylor came up just short in a long, tense match,” Dobbins said. “She wasn’t playing well to start the match but continued to fight and found her groove. That was a quality opponent and she can take a lot of positives from that match. I hope she can use it as some momentum going forward.”
Jenna Koepp and Katie Schleicher won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 team of Sydney Linskens and Abby Marr and the No. 3 team of Hannah Baneck and Grace Bowman won in straight sets.
“Our doubles teams helped us out a lot in this match with their ability to control the net and place the ball,” Dobbins said. “All three teams have the potential to do some very special things down the line, and we’ll continue to fine tune and focus on the next match.”
