Japanese and majors to exchange umpires again
NEW YORK (AP) _ Three Japanese umpires will work major league spring training games this spring, and four major league umpires will go to Japan for exhibition games.
Harry Wendelstedt and Randy Marsh of the NL, and Drew Coble and Rick Reed of the AL will work games in the Osaka area next month in conjunction with the opening of the Osaka Dome.
Noriyuki Fujimoto of Japan’s Pacific League, and Takeji Kobayashi and Masato Tomoyose of the Central League will work exhibition games in Arizona from March 3-11. They will be in a crew with Pacific Coast League umpire Mike DiMuro, who will spend this regular season umpiring in Japan’s Central League.
DiMuro’s father, Lou, was an AL umpire from 1963-82, and his brother, Ray, is a PCL umpire who worked 40 AL games last season.
The spring exchange of umpires began last year.
