Steer clear of chinook salmon nests

August 22, 2018

Boaters on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River are urged to steer clear of chinook salmon spawning nests, or redds.

The spawning season lasts until Sept. 15, according to a Middle Fork Outfitters Association news release.

Last year the salmon only dug 11 redds. Passing boats can disturb the process further endangering an already struggling species.

Orange “Redd Ahead” flagging will warn boaters when they approach spawning nests.

Volunteers will be stationed at the Boundary Creek and Indian Creek launch sites advising boaters to avoid the spawning grounds.
