BERLIN (AP) _ A 34-year-old man fled to West Berlin at a checkpoint, unhurt by the gunfire of East German border guards, police in the Western sector said Friday.

A second man tried to escape with him but apparently did not make it and his fate is unknown, Western military officials said.

Witnesses said guards fired at least five shots at the 34-year-old man as he crossed from the communist East into West Berlin's Rudow sector at about 9.15 p.m. Thursday, police reported.

They said the escape occurred near the Waltersdorfer Chaussee checkpoint in the southern part of the city.

Eleven East Germans have fled into West Germany or West Berlin so far this year. Two men escaped over the fenced and guarded border Tuesday into the West German state of Lower Saxony.
