Croce Climbs Bridge to Hang Banner
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Philadelphia 76ers president Pat Croce climbed the Walt Whitman Bridge on Wednesday to help hang a banner that reads, ``Go Sixers, Beat LA.″
Croce scaled the nearly 400-foot-high span to hang the 5-by-70-foot banner along with a crew, sending a message to thousands of motorists who cross the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The 46-year-old daredevil owner walked up one of the suspension bridge’s cables with several others as news helicopters hovered nearby.
Croce once descended upside down from the roof inside the First Union center during a timeout in a 1999 game. Before the playoffs, he climbed a water tower along the Schuylkill Expressway to hang a team banner.
Croce abandoned plans to drop from his suite onto the court after the Sixers beat Milwaukee in Game 7 of the conference finals.
The 76ers trail the Los Angeles Lakers 2-1 in the NBA Finals entering Game 4 on Wednesday night.
