Slovenia's Maja Matevzic beat sixth-seeded Tatiana Panova of Russia 6-4, 1-6, 6-0, and France's Nathalie Dechy advanced with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 victory over American Meghann Shaughnessy.

In men's play, American Brian Vahaly defeated Brazil's Ricardo Mello 6-1, 6-4, and Paraguay's Ramon Delgado beat France's Jerome Golmard 6-3, 6-2.

U.S. Open runner-up Venus Williams withdrew from the tournament Sunday, saying she needed to rest after losing to sister Serena on Saturday in the Grand Slam final.

``I feel that at this point and after such a long hard-court season, the best option for me is to rest and look after myself,'' Williams wrote in a note released by promoters.

The second-ranked Williams was the tournament's top seed. Yugoslavia's Jelena Dokic becomes the tournament's top seed, and Monica Seles becomes the No. 2 seed.

Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela, the tournament's top-ranked men's player, withdrew because of a back injury.
