STANFORD, Calif. (AP) _ Patrick Shurmur, nephew of Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Fritz Shurmur, on Tuesday was hired as offensive line coach at Stanford.

Shurmur, a Michigan State graduate who has been a coach with the Spartans since 1990, takes over from Dave Borbely, who accepted a position at Notre Dame.

Shurmur will coach guards and tackles at Stanford.

``As much as I love Michigan Sate, I felt I needed to expand my foundation as a football coach,'' Shurmur said. ``I wouldn't have left ... for just any other job.''

Shurmur, 33, lettered for four years with the Spartans and has a master's degree in engineering. He was the first graduate student to play football at Michigan State.
