Northrop Grumman to move 850 jobs off LI
BETHPAGE, N.Y. (AP) — Aerospace giant Northrop Grumman says it plans to move 850 jobs off Long Island by next year.
Newsday reported Monday (http://bit.ly/W0Wkgh ) the jobs are going to Florida and California in a cost-saving move in the face of declining defense budgets.
A spokesman for the company told Newsday that an unknown number of those workers will be offered transfers. He said the consolidation is expected to be completed by next year.
During the Reagan Administration in the 1980s, Long Island’s defense industry employed as many as 80,000 people. Newsday says that number was down to 31,000 in 2006.
