NATCHITOCHES, La. (AP) _ Derrick Beavers ran for 111 yards and one touchdown to lead McNeese State to a 20-3 victory over Northwestern State.

It was the first league win of the season for McNeese (3-7, 1-4 Southland Football League), and Northwestern’s (5-5, 2-3) second consecutive loss.

Northwestern was held without a touchdown for the first time in 31 games, dating back to a 20-0 loss to Southern in the 1994 season opener.

Northwestern played most of the game with third-string quarterback Mark Gibson. Starter Warren Patterson was out with a pulled groin and backup Brandon Emanuel left the game with a sprained ankle.

McNeese opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Earnest McGowan.

Northwestern closed within 7-3 before halftime on Eric Collins 23-yard field goal.

McNeese opened the third quarter with an impressive 80-yard drive, capped by Tim Leger’s 1-yard quarterback sneak.

Beaver’s touchdown came with 6:16 left to play and gave McNeese a 20-3 lead.

McNeese held Northwestern to only 263 yards. Northwestern entered the game averaging 432.
