Norman Wins Auckland Open

January 15, 2000

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) _ Sweden’s Magnus Norman outlasted American Michael Chang 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 Saturday to win the Auckland Open tennis tournament.

At 5-5 in the third set, Norman came from 0-40 to take the game to four deuce points before breaking Chang for a third time to take the lead.

Chang, trailing 0-40 in the 12th game, saved two match points but his return at 30-40 wasn’t good enough to keep him in the match.

Norman admitted his nervousness nearly cost him the match, especially after he double faulted on the last point of the first game to give the American an early break in the second set.

But the Swede broke back in the fourth game and then again in the sixth game to take the set.

``I wasn’t moving well at the start of the game, I was a little bit nervous, I think everyone expected me to win and I was expecting to win too,″ Norman said.

In the doubles final, Ellis Ferreira of South Africa and Rick Leach of the United States beat Olivier Delaitre of France and American Jeff Tarango 7-5, 6-4.
