Angels Call Up Catcher Molina
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) _ The Anaheim Angels designated catcher Charlie O’Brien for assignment on Monday and called up catcher Ben Molina from Triple-A Edmonton.
O’Brien, who spent seven weeks on the disabled list because of a torn ligament in his right foot, had only six hits in 62 at-bats this season while playing in 27 games.
The 12-year veteran has played for seven major league teams since 1985, batting .221 with 55 home runs, and played with the World Series champion Atlanta Braves in 1995.
Molina, 25, played 65 games for Edmonton this season and batted .286 with seven homers and 41 RBIs. He appeared in two games last season for the Angels, who originally signed him as a free agent in May 1993.
