KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A federal jury has found a Kansas City man not guilty in the fatal shooting of another man during a 2014 drug deal.

The Kansas City Star reports that 27-year-old Marcell Shavers was acquitted Thursday of using a firearm to commit murder during a drug-trafficking offense. Shavers had been charged in the 2014 New Year’s Day shooting death of 40-year-old Jose Medellin.

The jury did find Shavers guilty of conspiracy to possess methamphetamine with the intent to distribute. He faces up to 40 years in prison when he’s sentenced at a later date.

Prosecutors have said Medellin was fatally shot multiple times when several men went to his apartment to buy methamphetamine.

Another man, 46-year-old James Roberts, pleaded guilty in February to charges related to the drug deal and shooting.
