Retirement Community Coming to Ill.
CHICAGO (AP) _ The Del Webb Corp., builders of Sun City retirement communities, is hoping to hit it big in the snow belt.
The company announced plans Wednesday to build its first northern retirement community near Huntley, Ill., 45 miles northwest of Chicago.
In doing so, the Phoenix-based company hopes to capitalize on the growing numbers of Baby Boomers who want to stay near home after retirement.
``The pull from family and friends is stronger than the desire for a warmer climate,″ said Sun City corporate vice president and general manager Dave Schreiner. ``The market is larger among people who want to live close to home.″
Construction of the community _ for people 55 and older _ is expected to begin next spring. The first residents are scheduled to move in a year later, said Schreiner. The 4,800 homes will be priced from just over $100,000 to about $300,000.
Del Webb has built 10 Sun City developments in Arizona, Nevada, Texas, California and South Carolina.
