Unity mother remembered for her giving nature
Evelyn Stein was, as the old saying goes, a sucker for a man in uniform.
Luckily for John Henry, it was his uniform.
“We went to Latrobe High School together, graduated in 1957 and were friends then,” he said. “I came home from the service and went over to her house in my uniform, and that was it.”
The couple was married June 13, 1964.
“She would yell at me about it, but I can’t remember where we went on our first date,” he said. “Hey, it was 54 years ago.”
Evelyn A. Henry of Unity died Wednesday, July 25, 2018, of pancreatic cancer. She was 78.
Mrs. Henry was born April 4, 1940, in Latrobe, a daughter of the late George W. and Marie F. (Dotterway) Stein. She grew up on her parents’ farm near Unity’s Whitney neighborhood. After graduating high school, she worked at Kennametal and Latrobe Steel for several years.
In 1960, Mrs. Henry graduated from the former Pittsburgh Beauty Academy in Hempfield and began working as a beautician, something she continued for many years.
At home, that beautification extended to the Henrys’ yard.
“She enjoyed flowers, and she worked at Latrobe Floral for quite a few years when we were first married,” Henry said. “She had flowers all over our property. She just kept planting more and more.”
The Henrys and their three children made regular trips to Melbourne, Fla., to visit John’s parents.
Mrs. Henry’s daughter, Michelle Rawl of Kingston, N.Y., said her mother “always helped anybody that she could.”
“I was in the high school band, and she made corsages for everyone who was graduating,” she said. “Back in those days, that was a lot of kids.”
Mrs. Henry played the piano, and caroling was one of the family’s holiday traditions.
“Everyone would come around the piano and sing Christmas carols,” her daughter said.
Mrs. Henry was active in her local 4-H Club.
“Whether it was photography, milking goats or whatever, she helped out a lot with all of the things they did,” her son, Jason, said.
“That was a big part of growing up around here, and a lot of people know her from 4-H,” Rawl said.
Her son said he will remember his mother’s generosity.
“She was a very giving person, always asking what she could do for someone else,” he said.
Mrs. Henry is survived by her husband, John M. Henry; three children, John C. Henry, Michelle Rawl and Jason Henry; and five grandchildren.
