TIVERTON, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island transportation officials are warning drivers not to rubberneck during demolition of the old Sakonnet River Bridge.

WJAR-TV reports that the state Transportation Department wants drivers on the new bridge to pay attention to the road in front of them and not the demolition work on the old bridge.

The agency says the work will be very noticeable and loud at times. Traffic on the new bridge will not be disrupted.

While drivers may now just notice the work being done on the old bridge, the project began in March. It is not expected to end until next summer.

The old bridge that opened in 1956 closed in 2012.

The first phase of the project to demolish the old bridge will cost about $15 million.
