Tigers Mull Palmer DL Decision

May 11, 1999

DETROIT (AP) _ The Detroit Tigers will wait several days before deciding whether to place third baseman Dean Palmer on the disabled list with a broken right thumb.

Palmer was injured Sunday while fielding a hard smash from Baltimore’s Albert Belle. The ball glanced off his hand, but he recovered in time and threw out Belle. Palmer remained in the game until the fifth.

X-rays showed he sustained only a hairline fracture.

The Tigers were Monday and are off again Thursday and May 18.

``He has plenty of time to rest, so there’s no need to rush it,″ general manager Randy Smith said Monday.

Smith said he talked to Palmer by phone on Monday and he was ``upbeat and positive.″

Palmer joined Detroit this season after signing a $36 million, five-year contract as a free agent. He’s batting .273 with five homers and 15 RBIs.
