Joseph Nicolas, 98, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018, at Brookestone Acres in Columbus.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. Visitation is being held from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday with a 7 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Visitation will continue from 8:30-10 a.m. Wednesday morning, also at the funeral home. Burial is in the Presentation Cemetery near Bellwood with military honors being presented by the American Legion Hartman Post #84 Honor Guard.
Joseph was born Oct. 13, 1920, in Columbus to Joseph and Mary (Demuth) Nicolas. He received his education at District #13 near Bellwood. Joe served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1942-1946. He married Phyllis Glatter on Nov. 26, 1946, in Shelby. They farmed southwest of Bellwood for 48 years until moving into Columbus in 1994. He was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church where he had an hour of perpetual adoration for many years, the Knight of Columbus and the American Legion. Joe was a past member of St. Peters in Bellwood where he served as an acolyte for many years.
Joseph is survived by son Greg Nicolas of Columbus, daughter Linda (Tony) Masek of Lincoln, daughter Susan Nicolas of Columbus, son Michael (Karen) Nicolas of Virginia Beach, Virginia; eight grandchildren - Chad, Andrea, Alicia, Matt, Craig, Christopher, Amanda, Aaron, and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; parents, infant daughter, Patricia; sisters Marie (Joe) Rinke and Evelyn (Lawrence) Rinke and great-grandson, Zachary.
