September 11, 2014

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (AP) — Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale topped the $100 million mark as Irish and Japanese buyers spent big.

Flaxman Stables Ireland Limited paid Wednesday’s top price of $1.45 million for a filly by leading European sire Dubawi, the Irish-bred horse that resides in England. Plans are for the filly to return to Europe.

A colt by Bernardini-Yellow Heat sold for $925,000 to Teruo Ono of Japan, while Stonereath Farm of Paris, Kentucky, paid $1.1 million for a filly by Tiznow-Countess Lemonade bred by Flay.

Wednesday’s sales of $29.6 million for 104 yearlings brought the three-day total to $100.5 million for 345 horses. That’s down from last year’s gross of $111.5 million for 404 yearlings.

Sales continue through Sept. 21.
