Candidate calls for changes to public school funding

October 11, 2018

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate Christine Hallquist says she wants to change public school funding to an income-based tax system.

Vermont Public Radio reports Hallquist said Wednesday she wants to implement the change slowly so she can “fix any unforeseen problems.”

Two-thirds of Vermont residents pay school taxes based on their income instead of property values. The state Legislature considered changing the system last session, but it did not make it out of committee.

Hallquist says she is also against mandatory school mergers as imposed by Act 46.

She says the mergers will make the state’s economic situation worse, especially as more people leave the state.

Hallquist says she will work with communities to help keep schools open.
