North Carolina man charged in scooter driver’s death
BURLINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Authorities have charged a North Carolina man in the death of a scooter driver.
Police in Burlington tell local news sources 21-year-old Tyler Scott Laplaca of Elon is charged with felony death by motor vehicle, felony hit and run and driving while impaired.
According to police, 46-year-old Anton Lydell Downey of Burlington was killed when a Ford F-250 hit him as he rode his scooter early Saturday.
A news release from police said the driver of the pickup truck fled, but N.C. Highway Patrol troopers stopped him minutes later for speeding with his headlights off. Troopers said Laplace registered a blood-alcohol level of .14, nearly twice the legal limit.
Laplaca was jailed on a bond of $100,300. Online records didn’t indicate whether he has an attorney.
