HOUSTON (AP) _ A gun battle erupted Wednesday when deputies entered a house where 10 people were being held at gunpoint and three people were killed, including a deputy, authorities said.

The other two who died were believed to be among the five gunmen, Harris County Sheriff Tommy Thomas said.

Deputies were sent to the house early Wednesday after a young girl called police, saying men with guns had broken into her grandmother's home and were attacking her mother. The women and the girl were among 10 members of an extended family in the house, officials said.

Shots were heard during the call, and when deputies entered the house a gun battle erupted, said sheriff's Lt. Robert Van Pelt.

A 22-year-old woman and her infant son, were wounded, police said. Two suspects were arrested and authorities were seeking at least one other, Van Pelt said.

Authorities believed the invasion of the home was gang related and that the intruders were looking for drugs.
