Gore To Tour Chernobyl Plant
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Vice President Al Gore will tour the Chernobyl plant in Ukraine, site of the world’s worst nuclear accident, when he visits Russia and Ukraine July 21-25, White House officials said Wednesday.
In Moscow, Gore will convene an executive session of the U.S.-Russia commission on economic and technical cooperation and review bilateral issues with Russian Prime Minister Sergei Kiriyenko, officials said.
The vice president is scheduled to arrive in Kiev, Ukraine, on July 21 for a day and a half of meetings with the U.S.-Ukraine Binational Commission. Before departing for Moscow on July 23, he will also tour Chernobyl, where only one reactor remains functioning after the 1986 explosion and fire that killed at least 32 people and sent a deadly cloud of radiation across large sections of Russia and Europe.
Ukraine has pledged to close the ill-fated plant by 2000, but wants $1.2 billion in international aid first to build two new reactors to compensate for Chernobyl’s lost energy and find new jobs for its workers.
