ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) _ The Buffalo Bills have signed defensive tackle Chuckie Johnson and placed rookie linebacker Herve Damas on the preseason injured reserve list.

The 6-foot-4, 310-pound Johnson played last season for Barcelona in the World League of American Football. He had two tackles in five games with the Arizona Cardinals in 1993.

Johnson was signed by the Cardinals as a free agent out of Auburn, where he was a two-year starter. Buffalo has been looking for depth along their defensive line.

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) _ Palmeiras beat Gremio 5-1 Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Liberators Cup soccer tournament, but the losers still qualified for the next round of the South American tournament.

Gremio advanced to the semifinals by virtue of a 5-0 victory last week in Porto Alegre that forced Palmeiras to win by at least five goals to stay alive in the tournament of former South American club champions.

HOT SPRINGS, Va. (AP) _ The second round of the AJGA’s ClubCorp Junior Players championship found several players jockeying for position. One player jockeyed his way into the lead, but not before a bumpy ride on the Lower Cascades Course at The Homestead.

Nick Cassini, 16, of Atlanta had an eagle and six birdies on his way to a 4-under-par 68 Wednesday. Along with his first-round 70, he now stands at 6-under-par for the tournament.

Cassini holds a two-shot lead over Jason Bleau of San Diego and Erik Labitzke of Daytona Beach, Fla. Bleau and Labitzke are at 4-under 140s.

WILMINGTON, Ohio (AP) _ The Cincinnati Bengals have released defensive lineman Bill Johnson one day after claiming him off waivers from the Cleveland Browns.

Bengals general manager Mike Brown said team doctors said his knees are a concern.

The Browns had suspended Johnson earlier this year after he had been convicted twice of drunken driving in less than one year and had gotten into a bar fight with teammate Gerald Dixon.
