Lawmakers considering former colleague to be top regulator

March 2, 2018

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia lawmakers are considering a former colleague to be a top regulator of public utilities, financial service companies and other businesses.

Lawmakers are set to interview former Republican Sen. John Watkins next week to be one of three commissioners on the State Corporation Commission.

A pro-business moderate Republican who sometimes clashed with more conservative elements of his party, Watkins told The Associated Press Friday he would be “extremely interested” in the position. Lawmakers have already conducted interviews with other SCC candidates this year, but have not agreed on a consensus.

Watkins, who retired in 2016, could only serve on the SCC a couple of years before facing the mandatory retirement age.
