KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) _ A gasoline tanker overturned on a highway and later burst into flames Thursday as villagers crowded around to salvage spilled fuel. Police said 31 people were killed 71 others injured.

Police spokesman Asoumani Mugenyi said the driver of the tanker lost control trying to pass another truck in eastern Uganda.

The victims apparently were from among people in a truck and passenger van that stopped after the accident and villagers who went to scene to salvage the spilled gasoline.

Mugenyi said it was not clear how the fuel ignited.
