EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) _ A van going the wrong way on a highway with its headlights off crashed into a sport utility vehicle, killing six people and injuring more than 20, authorities said.

The van, which was carrying illegal immigrants, struck two cars Monday night before it slammed head-on into the sport utility vehicle. The crash on Interstate 8 killed the drivers of the SUV and the van and four passengers in the van.

The van’s headlights were off, probably to evade a Border Patrol checkpoint, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Steve Lopez. The immigrants were from Mexico and Brazil, Lopez said.

The crash happened about 50 miles east of San Diego, near the Mexican border.
