Providence homicide suspect held without bail
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island man charged with killing his estranged girlfriend has been held without bail.
Luis Matta was held Wednesday after appearing in court on charges of murder and violating a protective order.
Police say the 34-year-old Matta stabbed 33-year-old Rachael Rene on Tuesday morning in her Providence home then went to police headquarters to turn himself in.
The couple had an 8-month-old child who was in the apartment at the time but was unharmed. The baby is now in the custody of state child welfare officials.
Police say they had a strained relationship and Rene had taken out a restraining order against Matta.
The death was the city’s second homicide of the year.
This story has been corrected to show that the suspect’s name is ‘Luis Matta’ not ‘Louis Motta.’
