Queen Elizabeth Wraps Up Italy Tour
MILAN, Italy (AP) _ Queen Elizabeth II made a last stop at ``The Last Supper″ Thursday, wrapping up a four-day official visit to Italy, where she was welcomed by leaders of church and state and serenaded at La Scala.
The Queen and Prince Philip spent a half-hour at Milan’s Santa Maria delle Grazie church, where restorers recently finished cleaning and retouching Leonardo da Vinci’s ``The Last Supper.″
Prior Lorenzo Celeghin and restorer Pinin Brambilla were waiting outside the church along with 1,000 cheering onlookers. The queen left for London afterward from a nearby military airport.
The visit was the first in 20 years for the queen. Italy’s leaders held dinners in her honor in Rome, Pope John Paul II conferred with her at the Vatican on hopes for Christian unity and Ricardo Muti, one of the world’s leading conductors, led a La Scala concert for her.
