Alex Smith recovery could take 6-8 months
ASHBURN Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Monday that Alex Smith’s leg surgery went well and estimated the quarterback’s recovery could take 6-8 months.
Smith broke two bones in his right leg in Sunday’s 23-21 loss to the Houston Texans. He was immediately carted off the field and took an ambulance to the hospital.
“We anticipate him making a full recovery,” Gruden said. “I don’t think there was any ligament damage, no. It was a significant break of the bones.”
Smith fractured his tibia and fibula.
Gruden said the Redskins will have a better idea of Smith’s timetable in the coming days.
Washington traded for Smith in the offseason and signed him to a four-year, $94 million extension ($71 million guaranteed) that kicks in after this season.
In 10 games, Smith had 2,180 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.
