Military Identifies Florida Marine Killed in Accident
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) _ A Florida Marine was killed in an accidental shooting in northern Iraq and another soldier was wounded in the same accident, officials said.
Lance Cpl. Gary D. Haisman, 21, of Fort Myers died when a third soldier fired his machine gun during a training exercise near a refugee camp in the Iraqi city of Zakho.
Haisman’s widow, Shannon Haisman, was expected to give birth Tuesday.
Lance Cpl. Robert T. Minichino of Roselle, Ill., was wounded in the accident, said Lt. Col. Philip Crowley, a U.S. military spokesman at the Incirlik air base in southern Turkey.
Haisman’s and Minichino’s 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit is helping build and protect installations for returning Iraqi Kurdish refugees.
The Haisman family said military officials told them Minichino was shot in the leg and Haisman was shot in the chest. Crowley said the shootings were under investigation, but the military was convinced the soldier who fired the weapon hit the two men by accident.
Haisman was sent to the Middle East in January during the Persian Gulf War.
